GO TEAM TERMINATOR!

I have never considered fashion as something I would enjoy, however starting with a blank sheet and being told to create something out of it, although daunting, was an exciting challenge.

Our team was made up of 6 people, four girls, including me, and two boys.

Step 1: Pattern

This was a team exercise, and for some reason our team decided to go bold!

So orange it is.

We were given a pattern, of four lines and an +.

Step 2: Cutting

Having cut along the lines, we had a base to work with...

Step 3: Shaping

We really struggled with having any idea as to what we wanted to do...

TOP TIP FROM MEG 1: Make a plan before you begin!

We didn't have a sit down and plan at all at the beginning, we went straight in on cutting, (I think this was a big mistake, and wasted a lot of our time.)

Step 4: Taping Down Ideas

Communication was not great at the beginning.

We had three Chinese students in our team, which i think contributed to this.

TOP TIP FROM MEG 2:

Make a plan before you begin!!

Seriously! By this point we were all doing different things! There was no theme... and sitting down to talk through ideas would have made such a difference at this stage!

We were folding things this way and that... and it really began to look a bit odd...

Step 5: Creating texture

One of the girl's found this netting, so -because we didn't have a plan- we began to attach it to the right shoulder sleeve.

Adding a bit of blue thread just randomly, actually sparked an idea later down the line of where we could go with this...

This was about when we had lunch break... Over break I tried to rack my brains... By this point we had lots of ideas.

One was to try and include all the ideas and have a different theme for each section. I became worried that this would not look right, that it would look busy and confusing.

Then the idea of a futuristic/ technology vibe came to mind... we had already been touching upon it with the shape of the piece... and with the materials we were using.

This would give us the freedom to go wild but still have a base/inspiration to start from.

When we got back, I asked the team what they thought of it, and having said that they liked it, we then basically ran with that idea...

There were tones of old CD's!

Going with the technology idea, this would fit in perfectly and would also add a cool effect on the front of the costume.

Step 6: Sticking and Stapling

This was like the final sprint to the finish line.

It was like a sudden burst of inspiration struck each of us, and everything started to come together.

Having the netting come round the back, we stapled that in place.

Then adding binding to the hem of the 'wings' -as we called them- by glue gunning them!

We had a few issues with the glue gun at first but finally it worked and thank goodness it did!

One of our team found this like socket/plug which was PERFECT!

It became like a brooch on the right hand side of the shoulder.

I had been weaving wires through the netting on the left and then using the glue gun we joined it all up, gluing wires from the left onto the socket on the right.

The girls had put plastic cutlery on the right sleeve, with mini figurines on them. Attaching wires to the ends of the handles, this gave a creepy and sinister vibe.

OVER ALL...

I am very happy with the finished result.

The concept we had ended up with was, the technology had taken over mankind, encasing it and controlling it.

Our team actually worked together well, and as soon as we had a theme we were sorted.

Supporting each others ideas, and together creating something weird and yet kind of awesome!

Go Team Terminator!

By the way... we got voted second best out of everyone!!

Things To Remember...

  • Plan! Plan! Plan!

  • When cutting or using wires, CD's, or plastic, remember they are sharp and can harm if not done carefully!

  • Glue Guns are hot! Be careful to not touch!

  • Communicate/ Team work! If you want to do well, to create a fab item, and to have fun while doing it, it is important to support and talk to your team mates! Thankfully my team mates were lovely, and we ended up working very well together!
